Adam was male and female:

We remember that a mist went up and watered the ground (mankind) "But there went up a mist from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground" Gen 2:6. Water represents the spirit of life because nothing can live without water. Adams mist however indicates the preaching of the Word of God. The Baptism is such a mist it waters the ground (mankind). This preaching or evangelising is considered to be life giving knowledge just as Jesus said "I am the way the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by me" John 14:16

Through such preaching Adam was born, much like being re-born from Baptism. Adam therefore became a living soul. Adam was therefore the first Hebrews, a society just like Christians became a social group so was Adam. He was the first of the Jews and this is hinted at in Genesis 5:2 "Male and female created he them, and blessed them and called their name Adam in the day when they were created" Gen 5:2 . We notice that the plural form is used in this verse "them" and "their name Adam" he was made both male and female just as 1Co:15:45: And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
